Veteran Actor Kola Oyewo

Legendary Nollywood actor and scholar Kola Oyewo has shared the deeply personal challenges of his ongoing battle with an enlarged prostate, a condition that has significantly altered both his personal life and his illustrious career. Speaking to fellow actor Kunle Afod during a recent visit to his residence on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, the 80-year-old icon revealed that the illness was the primary reason for his recent absence from the television screen. Oyewo described how the condition, medically known as Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), weakened him physically and stripped him of the stamina required for the demanding, high-energy roles he was once known for across the Nigerian film industry.

Reflecting on the onset of the illness, the veteran performer recalled a distressing period marked by sleepless nights and frequent, urgent needs to urinate. He shared a candid and humbling detail of his journey, noting that there were times he would lose control of his bladder before even reaching the restroom. The turning point came when he took the decisive step to drive himself to the hospital after a series of particularly difficult nights. Initial medical advice suggested he travel to Akure for specialized care, but feeling too weak and isolated for the journey, he returned home to consult his family doctor with his wife. Following comprehensive testing, the diagnosis was confirmed, marking the beginning of a long road to management and recovery.

The physical toll of the enlarged prostate has forced a major shift in Oyewo’s professional life, as he can now only accept minor roles that do not require extensive travel or long hours on location. "Before now, I could go from one location to another and play any role, but the illness has laid me back," he admitted, noting that while he is feeling better, the recovery process does not restore one's former vigor completely. Despite these restrictions, the actor expressed profound gratitude for his life, acknowledging that many of his peers continue to stand strong while others did not survive similar health crises. He attributed his survival to his early decision to seek medical help, urging others to prioritize their health at the first sign of symptoms.

Kola Oyewo, whose career began in 1964 with the Oyin Adejobi theatre group, remains a revered figure in Nigerian arts, famous for his roles in classics like The Gods Are Not to Blame and Sango. Beyond his acting prowess, he served as a dedicated lecturer at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) for fifteen years until his retirement in 2011.
