In a significant move for the Labour Party (LP) in the Southeast, Henry Udeh has officially emerged as the Chairman of the Ebonyi State Chapter. The transition occurred during the party’s state congress held on Monday, April 27, 2026, marking a new chapter for the LP as it prepares for future electoral cycles in the state.

Udeh, who was a key figure in the party's mobilization efforts during the previous general elections, secured the leadership position following a consensus-driven process. His leadership comes at a time when the party is looking to capitalize on its growing popularity to challenge the dominance of the APC and PDP at the grassroots level.

In his acceptance speech, the newly minted Chairman emphasized a "bottom-up" approach to party administration. He vowed to focus on digitalizing membership registration across all 171 wards in the state and ensuring that the Labour Party remains a credible alternative for the youth and professionals in Ebonyi. Udeh also signaled that his executive team would prioritize transparency in internal party affairs to avoid the legal disputes that have occasionally dogged state chapters in the past.

The congress was monitored by representatives from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and national officers of the Labour Party.

Do you think the Labour Party can maintain its momentum in Ebonyi without a major national election on the horizon, or will it struggle against the established state machinery? Share your comments below!
