The Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria (MWAN), Gombe State Chapter, in partnership with the North-East Development Commission, has launched a campaign to raise awareness about breast and cervical cancers.
Speaking at the Federal Teaching Hospital Chapel, Dr Fatima Bakari from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology emphasised the importance of early detection, urging women to undergo regular screening every three years.
The initiative, themed “Every Story is Unique, Every Journey Matters,” includes a road walk and free screening exercise scheduled for Wednesday. Bakari advised women to practise safe sex, conduct monthly breast self-examinations, and ensure their children receive the HPV vaccine, now part of Nigeria’s national immunisation programme.
Another consultant, Dr Aishatu Musa, encouraged residents to take advantage of the free screenings, while parishioner Barrister Martha Daniel commended MWAN for dispelling health-related myths. The awareness drive aims to reduce rising cancer cases in the region and promote preventive healthcare among women.
