The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, has warned that the number of conflicts around the world has almost doubled since 2010. This shows a sharp rise in violence that has intensified humanitarian crises and disrupted peace globally.
Türk said that a growing number of wars, civil unrest and armed confrontations are contributing to an unprecedented global security challenge, with civilians bearing the brunt of the violence.
He highlighted that the uptick in fighting has led to increased displacement, greater human suffering and heightened violations of human rights. Therefore, urging the international community to reinvigorate efforts toward conflict prevention and peaceful resolution.
Türk’s remarks reflect growing concern among global institutions about the erosion of stability in several regions, where diplomatic solutions and peace-building mechanisms are being tested by protracted violence.
He also emphasised the importance of upholding international humanitarian law and protecting civilians, calling on states and actors involved in conflicts to prioritise human rights and engage in meaningful negotiations to end hostilities.
