France, UK Convene 40-Nation Talks on Hormuz Security After Conflict

France and Britain are spearheading fresh diplomatic efforts to restore stability in the Strait of Hormuz, convening talks with about 40 countries to plan a post-conflict maritime security mission.
The meeting, co-chaired by French President Emmanuel Macron and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, is aimed at developing a coordinated multinational strategy to safeguard global shipping once hostilities in the region subside.
The proposed initiative centres on a “strictly defensive” mission designed to ensure freedom of navigation through the vital oil transit route, which has been severely disrupted following US-Israeli strikes on Iran earlier this year.
The Strait of Hormuz, a critical artery for global energy supplies, has seen traffic grind to a near halt amid escalating tensions and a US-imposed naval blockade on Iranian ports.
Despite pressure from Washington for allies to support the blockade, European nations have resisted direct military involvement, instead focusing on a post-war framework that prioritises maritime security and international law.
Discussions are expected to address key issues including the safety of stranded seafarers, the resumption of commercial shipping, and potential deployment of a multinational force to secure the waterway after a ceasefire.
Officials say the mission could involve intelligence sharing, naval escorts, and mine-clearing operations, depending on how the security situation evolves.
Although the United States and Iran are not directly participating in the talks, diplomats acknowledge that any lasting solution will ultimately require coordination with both parties.
The outcome of the discussions is expected to shape broader international planning on maritime security in the Gulf, as countries seek to stabilise a route that carries a significant share of the world’s oil trade.
