Florida, Execute, 65-year-old, Raping, Killing

A 65-year-old man, Norman Grim, is scheduled to be executed by lethal injection on Tuesday in Florida for the 1998 rape and murder of his neighbour, Cynthia Campbell.

Grim, who lived next door to the 41-year-old lawyer, dropped all appeals against his death sentence and will be executed at Florida State Prison in Raiford at 6 p.m. local time.

His execution marks the 40th in the United States this year — the highest annual total since 2012. Florida leads with 14 executions, followed by Alabama and Texas, with five each.

While 33 executions this year have been carried out by lethal injection, others involved firing squads or nitrogen hypoxia — a controversial method condemned by the United Nations as inhumane.

Capital punishment remains active in 24 U.S. states, though three others — California, Oregon, and Pennsylvania — currently observe moratoriums on executions.
