The Federal Government has directed Dangote Sugar Refinery Plc to achieve an annual production target of 600,000 metric tonnes by 2030 as part of efforts to boost local sugar production and reduce reliance on imports.
The directive is in line with Nigeria’s broader strategy to strengthen domestic manufacturing capacity and enhance self-sufficiency in key agricultural commodities.
Dangote Sugar, a major player in the country’s sugar industry, is expected to scale up its production capacity through ongoing investments and expansion of its backward integration projects, which focus on local sugarcane cultivation and processing.
The move shows the government’s commitment to the National Sugar Master Plan, aimed at revitalising the sugar sector, creating jobs, and conserving foreign exchange by reducing import dependence.
Industry stakeholders note that achieving the 600,000 metric tonnes target will require sustained investment in infrastructure, improved farming practices, and strong collaboration between the government and private sector operators.
The development reflects ongoing efforts to reposition Nigeria’s sugar industry for long-term growth while supporting broader economic diversification goals.
