The Federal Government has introduced a structured compensation scheme aimed at supporting civil servants who suffer work-related injuries, occupational diseases, disabilities, or death while on duty.

The initiative, unveiled in Abuja by the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Didi Walson-Jack, marks a significant shift in the government’s approach to employee welfare and workplace protection across the federal civil service.

According to an official statement issued by the Office of the Head of the Civil Service, the newly operationalised Employees’ Compensation Scheme (ECS) is designed to ensure timely financial support and care for affected workers and their families. The scheme also complements existing welfare programmes, including the Group Life Assurance Scheme, broadening the safety net available to public servants.

Walson-Jack described the ECS as a critical intervention that reinforces the government’s commitment to safeguarding the dignity, safety, and well-being of its workforce. She noted that the programme aligns with the broader welfare agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

To ensure effective implementation, the Office of the Head of the Civil Service has partnered with the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) through a formal Memorandum of Understanding. The collaboration is expected to streamline claims processing and improve service delivery.

Speaking at the unveiling, NSITF Managing Director Oluwaseyi Faleye highlighted the scheme as a major step towards establishing a transparent and structured compensation system. He added that the newly introduced ECS Help Desk will serve as a central platform for information dissemination, claims assistance, and feedback management.

The Federal Government says the rollout of the scheme represents a milestone in strengthening workforce protection while building a more responsive and welfare-driven civil service.

As the scheme takes effect, its success will likely depend on efficient implementation and accessibility for workers across all levels of the civil service.

Will this new compensation structure truly deliver timely support to civil servants, or will implementation challenges limit its impact? What do you think?
