Tragedy struck the High Level area of Makurdi, Benue State, in the early hours of Monday as suspected cultists reportedly killed eight people. The attackers invaded a residence along Aliade Street around 2:00 a.m., opening fire on the occupants. According to eyewitnesses, the gunmen arrived on motorcycles and targeted a specific compound where they woke up four people and shot them dead. Four other neighbors who rushed out to see what was happening after hearing the gunshots were also gunned down by the fleeing criminals.
The Chairman of Makurdi Local Government Area, Hon. Joseph Keffi, confirmed the sad incident and linked it to a cult war. He explained that the main target was a cult member who had escaped from the North Bank area to hide with his friends at High Level. Unfortunately, the people killed were said to be innocent individuals who only gave the suspect accommodation without knowing his background. The chairman expressed deep pain over the loss of lives and noted that one notorious gang leader named "Odinaka" is believed to be behind the series of violent attacks in the state capital.
The Benue State Police Command has already moved into action to restore order. The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Udeme Edet, stated that 11 suspects have been arrested so far in connection with the killings. While the bodies of the victims have been deposited at the Benue State University Teaching Hospital and another private mortuary, security has been beefed up in the area. The police are currently hunting for the gang leader and other members of the group who are still on the run.
