Edo State Begins Evacuation of Mentally Unstable Persons for Urban Renewal

The Edo State Government has commenced a statewide exercise to evacuate mentally unstable persons and destitute individuals from the streets of Benin City and other major urban centers. The initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry of Social Development and Humanitarian Affairs, is part of the "Urban Renewal" strategy aimed at restoring the aesthetic appeal of the state capital while providing medical and social support to vulnerable citizens.
Officials from the ministry, supported by security agencies, have been deployed to key locations such as Ring Road, Sapele Road, and the GRA axis to identify and transport individuals to designated state-run rehabilitation centers. According to government spokespersons, the goal is not merely to "clear the streets" but to ensure that these individuals receive professional psychiatric care, nutrition, and eventual reintegration with their families.
The administration has emphasized that maintaining a "safe and sane" environment is critical for attracting investment and boosting tourism. To support this, the government has recently upgraded several healthcare facilities and psychiatric wings to accommodate the influx of persons being transitioned from the streets.
Do you believe that evacuating mentally unstable persons is an effective step toward urban renewal, or should the government focus more on building long-term community mental health support systems? Share your comments below!
