Davido Brought Toxicity, Rivalry to Nigerian Music Industry, Samklef Claims

Music producer and singer Samklef has alleged that Afrobeats star Davido introduced toxicity and unhealthy rivalry into the Nigerian music industry. Speaking during a recent interview, Samklef claimed that the industry was more collaborative and supportive before the rise of intense fan wars and public feuds associated with top artists. He argued that competition existed in the past but was not driven by hostility or constant online battles.
According to Samklef, the emergence of aggressive fan bases and rivalry narratives escalated when Davido became prominent, with fans often attacking other artistes and creating divisions. He stated that this environment encouraged disrespect, social media insults, and unnecessary comparisons that overshadowed music quality and creativity. Samklef maintained that such rivalry has negatively affected unity among artistes and producers who previously worked together more freely.
Samklef also recalled earlier periods in the Nigerian music industry when artistes focused more on building the scene collectively, collaborating across labels, and supporting one another’s growth. He insisted that the current culture of constant comparison between Davido, Wizkid, Burna Boy, and others fuels tension and distracts from artistic development. He stressed that competition should inspire excellence rather than hostility.
What do you think about Samklef’s claim and the role of rivalry in Nigerian music today? Share your thoughts in the comments section.
