Crackdown in Lagos: Police to Arraign Protest Leaders Over Demolition
Omoyeni Olabode

The Lagos State Police Command has announced its intention to charge several leaders of recent protests against the state's ongoing demolition exercise in court. This development follows a series of demonstrations by residents and activists who have condemned the clearing of structures across various parts of the metropolis, most notably in the Makoko and water-front communities.
The protests gained significant momentum on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, saw hundreds of displaced residents and human rights advocates demanding an immediate halt to the exercise and compensation for those who have lost their homes and livelihoods.
The police, however, maintain that the leaders of these demonstrations crossed the line into "unlawful assembly" and "incitement of public disturbance." According to official statements, some protesters allegedly obstructed traffic and engaged in acts that threatened the peace of the state.
“While the right to peaceful protest is constitutional, we will not fold our arms and watch the state descend into chaos,” a police spokesperson stated. “The leaders of these groups encouraged the blocking of major highways and defied lawful orders to disperse. They will be arraigned to answer for their actions.”
As the state prepares to file charges, tensions remain high in the affected communities, with many displaced residents still sleeping in the open and calling for a more compassionate approach to city planning.
Is the police action a necessary step to maintain order, or is it an unfair attempt to silence people who have lost their homes? Should the government focus on legal charges or on providing shelter for the displaced? Share your comments below!
