Nigeria has achieved a major medical breakthrough at The Prostate Clinic (TPC) in Lagos, where a team of specialists led by Professor Kingsley Ekwueme, Consultant Urological, Laparoscopic, and Robotic Surgeon, successfully carried out the first UroLift surgery in the country’s medical history. The groundbreaking procedure marks a new era in the treatment of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), commonly known as prostate enlargement, offering Nigerian men a less invasive alternative to traditional prostate surgery.
The UroLift system, globally recognized for its innovative approach, involves the use of small implants to lift and hold the enlarged prostate tissue, relieving pressure on the urethra without cutting, heating, or removing any tissue. This minimally invasive method allows for quicker recovery, reduced complications, and preservation of sexual function, making it a major advancement in urological care.
Professor Ekwueme described the achievement as “a transformative moment for Nigerian medicine,” emphasizing that the success of the surgery showcases the country’s growing capacity to adopt world-class medical technologies. He noted that the procedure was completed without complications and that the patient is recovering well.
The successful UroLift surgery positions Nigeria as one of the few countries in Africa capable of performing advanced urological procedures locally. This breakthrough is expected to reduce the number of Nigerians traveling abroad for prostate treatment. What are your thoughts on this milestone in Nigeria’s medical field?
