Ayo Fayose Warns Opposition Against 2027 Fragmentation, Urges Unity Around Peter Obi
Omoyeni Olabode

Former Governor of Ekiti State, Ayo Fayose, has sent a strong warning to opposition parties regarding their strategy for the 2027 general elections. Speaking on the current political realignment, Fayose suggested that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and other opposition groups must be strategic about their choice of candidate. He noted that if a unified front is not formed—specifically mentioning the possibility of the ADC presenting Peter Obi as a candidate—the outcome for the opposition would be "worse than coming together." Fayose’s comments come amid increasing talks of a "mega party" or a merger intended to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Fayose emphasized that the fragmentation of votes among multiple strong opposition candidates was a major factor in the 2023 election results. He argued that if the various opposition factions do not find a way to align under a single, formidable umbrella, they will likely face the same defeat in 2027. According to the former governor, the ego and individual ambitions of political leaders must be set aside for a collaborative effort. He expressed concern that running separate campaigns would only serve to strengthen the incumbent's position, making it nearly impossible for any single opposition party to secure a victory on its own.
The politician also pointed out that the Nigerian electorate is looking for a clear and unified alternative to the current administration. He believes that Peter Obi remains a significant figure in the political space and that any serious attempt to win the presidency must take his influence into account.
Do you agree with Ayo Fayose that the opposition must unite behind one candidate to win in 2027? Share your thoughts in the comments.
