Aunty Esther Dies After Rejecting Blood Transfusion Despite Donations

A Lagos woman popularly known as Aunty Esther has died after refusing a medically advised blood transfusion, despite the availability of donated funds and blood support for her treatment. Reports indicate that Aunty Esther had been battling a serious illness and was admitted to a medical facility in Lagos where doctors recommended an urgent transfusion as part of her care plan.
Medical sources familiar with the case said the transfusion was required to stabilise her condition and enable further treatment. Although members of the public reportedly donated money to support her medical bills and ensure access to required procedures, Aunty Esther declined the transfusion on religious grounds, maintaining her position even as her health deteriorated. Doctors were therefore limited in the treatment options they could provide.
The case has drawn public attention because the refusal came at a time when blood and financial support were reportedly available. Health professionals have repeatedly stated that blood transfusion is often critical in managing severe conditions such as cancer, anaemia, or complications arising from intensive treatment. They also stress that while patients have the right to make personal decisions, such refusals can significantly affect survival outcomes.
