Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi has described the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) as a special and unique football tournament that goes beyond just competition on the pitch. In comments to BBC Newsbeat ahead of AFCON 2025 in Morocco, Iwobi said the tournament celebrates African culture, passion and unity in ways that other competitions do not, emphasising that there is more to it than just the football itself. Players and fans alike see it as a moment to showcase the richness of the continent’s sporting spirit.

Iwobi highlighted the cultural aspects that make AFCON distinct, noting that teams walk into changing rooms to music and that supporters bring vibrant energy to matches. He explained that the spectacle of the tournament reflects diverse African traditions including music, dress and fan engagement, making it feel like a celebration rather than just a normal fixture. This sense of cultural pride, he said, is part of what makes AFCON so meaningful to players representing their countries.

The Fulham star also spoke about Nigeria’s hopes in the tournament, saying the disappointment of missing out on a second successive FIFA World Cup has only fuelled the team’s determination to succeed at AFCON. He expressed belief that winning the continental crown is the best way for the Super Eagles to “make it right” after the narrow loss in the final of the previous edition, and he urged fans to rally behind the team as they aim to bring the trophy home.

What are your expectations for Nigeria at AFCON this season, and do you agree that the tournament is more than just football? Comment below and share your thoughts.
