76 Dead, 27 Missing as Floods Devastate Central and Eastern Mexico

At least 76 people have died and 27 others remain missing after severe floods and mudslides struck central and eastern Mexico this month, authorities said on Monday.
President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that nearly 120 communities remain cut off, with roads and highways destroyed by the disaster. She pledged 10 billion pesos ($544 million) in aid for over 100,000 affected families, emphasizing that emergency operations are ongoing.
The state of Hidalgo recorded the highest number of isolated municipalities—65 in total—while Veracruz, along the Gulf of Mexico, was the worst hit by flooding. Over 12,700 soldiers remain deployed to assist rescue and relief efforts.
Meteorologists attributed the catastrophe to the collision of a tropical system from the Gulf and a cold front from the north, which intensified rainfall during Mexico’s wet season.
