A 19-year-old Nigerian student, Marvelous Ugochukwu, has died in a tragic road accident in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada, after a truck driver ran a red light and lost control, crashing into multiple structures. The incident took place on Sunday at the intersection of Dewdney Avenue and Elphinstone Street, leaving the community in shock and mourning the young student’s untimely death.
Eyewitnesses told Peoples Gazette that the truck driver was attempting to beat a red light when he lost control of the vehicle, which then collided with a car, a bus shelter, a fence, and a light pole. Marvelous, who was reportedly seated at the bus stop, was struck with severe force. “She was just sitting at the bus stop when the truck hit her. It was a horrific scene,” one witness said. The violent impact destroyed much of the bus shelter, scattering debris across the road.
Emergency responders arrived quickly but pronounced Marvelous dead at the scene. The driver of the car involved in the collision sustained serious injuries and was immediately taken to a nearby hospital for urgent treatment. Authorities from the Regina Police Service closed off the intersection for several hours to conduct a detailed investigation and took the truck driver into custody for questioning.
Marvelous’ death has sparked an outpouring of grief within the Nigerian student community in Canada and back home in Nigeria. Many have called for stricter enforcement of road safety laws, particularly regarding heavy-duty truck operations in urban areas. Investigations are still ongoing to determine whether speed, impairment, or mechanical failure played a role in the crash. What do you think should be done to improve road safety and prevent such tragedies in the future? Share your thoughts in the comments.
