Libyan Migrants, Shipwreck

At least 18 people have died after a wooden boat carrying dozens of migrants capsized off Surman, Libya, on Tuesday, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) confirmed.

According to the agency, the vessel overturned only hours into its journey due to high waves. Sixty-four survivors were rescued, including Sudanese, Bangladeshi, Pakistani, and Somali nationals. The nationalities of the deceased have yet to be identified.

The IOM described the tragedy as a “stark reminder” of the dangers faced by migrants attempting the central Mediterranean route, one of the world’s deadliest migration corridors. So far in 2025, the IOM’s Missing Migrants Project has recorded 1,046 deaths and disappearances on this route, including over 500 off Libya’s coast.

The agency said it is working with local partners to provide medical aid and essential services to survivors while urging for immediate global action to prevent further maritime disasters.
