‘Yahoo Boys’ Causing Tighter Visa Restrictions for Nigerians Abroad — EFCC Warns

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has raised concerns that internet fraudsters, commonly known as “Yahoo boys”, are making it harder for ordinary Nigerians to secure visas. EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, said that the actions of these cybercriminals are damaging Nigeria’s reputation internationally, resulting in stricter travel scrutiny for innocent citizens.
Olukoyede, speaking at a youth security event in Port Harcourt, emphasised that visa officers abroad are increasingly viewing Nigerians with suspicion because of high-profile cases of online fraud, money laundering and other related crimes. He warned that pop culture’s glamorisation of quick wealth is pushing more youths toward fraud instead of legitimate opportunities like technology, agriculture or the creative sector.
According to the EFCC boss, the commission has observed several instances where Nigerians travelling with passports are taken aside for more intense immigration checks, even when they have done nothing wrong. He described this trend as unfair but indicated that it is a consequence of the country’s image being tarnished.
He also urged youths, especially in South-South Nigeria, to disengage from fraudulent practices and instead focus on building skills and work ethic. Meanwhile, the EFCC has pledged to increase public sensitisation, enforcement and collaboration with communities to curb cybercrime.
