President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his commitment to transforming Nigeria’s agriculture sector, urging citizens and governments alike to prioritize food production. Speaking at a recent event in Abuja, he emphasized that agriculture must shed its reputation as a subsistence activity and evolve into a modern, attractive, and economically rewarding endeavor—hence his phrase “making agriculture more sexy.”

He highlighted the urgent need to confront the country’s food security crisis: over 30 million Nigerians face food insecurity, and erratic climate conditions have severely impacted crop yields . To boost resilience, Tinubu’s administration plans the mechanization of approximately 500,000 hectares of farmland, a move designed to elevate Nigeria from importer to exporter of food staples .

As part of his broader “Renewed Hope Agenda,” the president announced investments in irrigation infrastructure, low-interest loans for farmers, and the expansion of agriculture-focused tertiary institutions. He has also launched initiatives such as the Greener Hope Agricultural Mechanisation Programme and partnerships aimed at equipping farmers with modern tools and technologies.

Tinubu urged state governors and all Nigerians to join the effort by embracing farming—not just as a means of subsistence, but as a reliable business and source of national pride. “Everybody should grow something,” he declared, underscoring that changing attitudes, combined with strong policy support, could drive economic diversification, reduce hunger, and reshape Nigeria’s agricultural landscape.
