USAID Contraceptives Destruction: $9.7–$10 Million Aid Blocked Under Trump

The Trump administration has decided to destroy roughly $9.7 million to $10 million worth of contraceptive supplies that were purchased by USAID under the previous administration. These supplies include intrauterine devices (IUDs), hormonal implants, injectable contraceptives, and oral birth control packets. The stockpile was stored in a warehouse in Belgium awaiting distribution to low-income countries, including those in Africa.

Officials say the decision to destroy the supplies stems from new policy restrictions under the Mexico City policy reinstated by Trump’s administration. That policy limits U.S. foreign aid that could be seen as linked to abortion-related activities. The administration indicated that no eligible buyers could be found to redistribute the supplies, even though humanitarian organisations offered to take them. The cost of incineration alone is reported at about $167,000.

The destruction has drawn sharp criticism from international NGOs, women’s health advocates, the government of Belgium, and UN agencies. Critics warn that destroying fully usable contraceptives will worsen reproductive health access, increase unintended pregnancies, and contribute to unsafe abortions. Some of the supplies were reportedly not near expiration — many with shelf-life until 2027 or beyond.

In summary, this move represents a stark shift in U.S. foreign aid priorities under President Trump. It sacrifices existing reproductive health supplies that could have met urgent needs in vulnerable nations. While policy supporters argue this is consistent with the administration’s views on “life” and abortion, many health experts see the decision as costly both economically and in terms of human well-being.

What’s your reaction to this policy change and its consequences? Do you think there was an alternative to destruction or is this in line with shifting values in U.S. diplomacy? Let me know in the comments.
