US Set to Withdraw Main Contingent of 200 Troops From Nigeria by Late September

The United States Pentagon is preparing to withdraw approximately 200 military personnel deployed to Nigeria by late September 2026 as their primary counterterrorism mission winds down.
The troops were initially deployed to northeastern Nigeria in February 2026 to support counter-insurgency operations against Islamic State (ISIS/Daesh) factions and militant groups in the Lake Chad Basin. U.S. and Nigerian military officials described the deployment as highly successful, pointing to key joint operations—including a major raid in May 2026 that resulted in the neutralization of Abu-Bilal al-Minuki, the second-in-command of ISIS in the Lake Chad region.
“The specific operation in the Lake Chad Basin of Nigeria not only helped the countries in that immediate region; it also helped countries globally as that disrupted the ISIS network... We are continuing the partnership that Nigeria has asked for to help continue with the intelligence sharing and understanding necessary to prosecute these difficult tasks.”
— Gen. Dagvin R.M. Anderson, Commander of US Africa Command
American defense officials reportedly view the targeted deployment as a potential blueprint for future security partnerships across Africa, favoring short-term, low-footprint operations reliant on intelligence sharing and capacity building over prolonged foreign troop presence.
