The United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO), the Lagos State Government (through LASEPA), and Japan have launched a targeted initiative to curb cholera outbreaks in flood-affected parts of Lagos—particularly Ikorodu and Badagry. The project, backed by a $225,000 grant from Japan, aims to strengthen the capacity of informal food and water vendors, waste workers, and students by training them in hygiene best practices, safe water handling, and emergency disease response.

Through seminars, public-health campaigns, and the distribution of essentials like water-purification kits and test reagents, the partnership will help frontline workers operate more safely during floods, prevent water contamination, and ensure early detection of cholera cases. LASEPA and UNIDO stress that this multi-layered strategy is critical for protecting public health and supporting economic livelihoods in vulnerable communities.
