Trump Declares: Relationship with Musk Is Over, Warns of “Serious Consequences”

President Donald Trump has announced that his once-favorable relationship with tech billionaire Elon Musk is definitively over. In a June 7 phone interview, Trump confirmed, “I would assume so, yeah” when asked if their relationship had ended, adding he has “no intention of speaking to him” again . Once a key supporter—spending over $290 million during the 2024 campaign—Musk has grown critical of Trump’s policy direction, sparking a fiery farewell .
The tension escalated further with Trump issuing a stark warning: Musk “will have to pay very serious consequences” if he financially supports Democratic candidates challenging Republicans backing Trump's tax-and-spending agenda, the “Big Beautiful Bill” . While Trump did not clarify the nature of these consequences, analysts believe federal contracts—such as those held by Musk’s SpaceX and Starlink—could be leveraged. However, he hasn't yet pursued any contract cancellations .
This feud has had financial reverberations: Tesla’s stock plunged 14%, erasing roughly $150 billion in market value on the back of Trump's contract threats and Musk’s vocal opposition to the bill. The clash threatens broader U.S. economic and political dynamics, as partisan and business leaders weigh in .
Despite this public split, Musk has removed some of his most severe posts criticizing Trump—including one implying Trump’s involvement in Jeffrey Epstein files—and pondered launching a new centrist political party . As both continue their verbal sparring, it’s clear their alliance has turned into one of the most high-stakes tech-politics battles in recent memory.
