Tony Elumelu, Afriland Towers Fire

Tony Elumelu, Chairman of Heirs Holdings and United Bank for Africa (UBA), has cut short his trip to New York for the United Nations General Assembly in order to return to Lagos following the tragic Afriland Towers fire. The blaze, which erupted on Broad Street, Lagos Island, claimed lives among his colleagues working within Afriland Properties and UBA.

In a statement addressed to staff, Elumelu described himself as “shattered” by the loss. He emphasised that no words can fully express the gravity of the incident, not for the bereaved families, the friends of the victims, or those who shared both their professional lives and missions.

He has pledged full support for those injured and bereaved, promising assistance to the families and calling for solidarity among remaining staff. In honour of the victims, Elumelu has ordered a minute’s silence at 12:00 noon WAT across all Heirs Holdings companies.

An investigation into the cause of the fire has already begun. At this stage, the exact number of casualties has not been confirmed.
