Tinubu Slashes Kidney Dialysis Cost from ₦50,000 to ₦12,000 in Major Healthcare Push

President Bola Tinubu has introduced a bold healthcare reform by approving an 80% subsidy on kidney dialysis treatment across federal hospitals nationwide. This significant move has effectively reduced the cost of each dialysis session from ₦50,000 to just ₦12,000, providing much-needed relief for patients grappling with kidney disease.
The subsidy is already being rolled out in several key medical institutions, spanning the six geopolitical zones. Beneficiaries include patients at Federal Medical Centres in Ebute-Metta (Lagos), Jabi (Abuja), Owerri, Abeokuta, and Azare; major teaching hospitals such as University College Hospital (UCH) Ibadan, LUTH Lagos, University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH), University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) and University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH).
Launched initially in January at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH), Bauchi, the initiative has already impacted lives. According to Hammatu Haruna, manager of the renal centre there, "patients are now paying only ₦12,000 per session… many who previously struggled to afford dialysis can now access treatment regularly, leading to significant improvements in their health."
Daniel Bwala, Special Adviser on Policy Information to the President, stated on X that the policy forms part of the broader “Renewed Hope Agenda”, reflecting Tinubu’s commitment to ensuring that no Nigerian is denied healthcare due to cost.
