Tinubu Extends Customs Boss Adewale Adeniyi’s Tenure

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a one-year extension of service for the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Bashir Adewale Adeniyi.
Adewale Adeniyi’s tenure was supposed to end by August 31, 2025. However, his leadership has been described as pivotal to the ongoing reforms within the agency. Under his guidance, the Customs Service recorded increased revenue collection, improved anti-smuggling operations, and initiated key digital transformation efforts to enhance transparency and efficiency.
The extension is seen as a move to consolidate the gains achieved so far and ensure continuity in the agency’s modernization agenda. Some of the ongoing reforms he is tasked with include modernisation of the NCS, implementation of the national single window project, and execution of Nigeria’s obligations under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) protocol.
According to a statement issued by the president's spokesperson, President Tinubu considered Adeniyi’s performance, strategic direction, and alignment with the administration’s economic recovery goals in granting the tenure elongation. This marks a rare but significant endorsement of a public servant's contributions to national development, especially in a revenue-generating agency like Customs.
