President Bola Tinubu has officially commissioned the African Medical Centre of Excellence (AMCE) in Abuja, marking a significant milestone in Nigeria's healthcare sector. Developed by the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) in partnership with King’s College Hospital, London, the AMCE is poised to transform healthcare delivery across the continent.
The AMCE is a quaternary-level, multi-specialty medical institution specializing in oncology, cardiology, and haematology. With an initial capital outlay of $300 million, the facility is expected to expand to a $750 million investment upon full development, making it the single largest private healthcare investment in Nigeria and Africa in general.
The centre aims to provide world-class medical services, reduce medical tourism, and offer training opportunities for healthcare professionals. It is projected to serve over 350,000 patients within its first five years of operation and create approximately 3,000 jobs during its construction and operational phases.
President Tinubu emphasized the government's commitment to supporting initiatives that enhance the nation's healthcare infrastructure. He stated, "We are open and ready to assist this project in every way possible. Africa is in need, and Nigeria is committed to the needs of its people. Putting people’s welfare first is putting healthcare first".
The commissioning of the AMCE represents a significant step towards achieving self-sufficiency in healthcare for Nigeria and the African continent at large.
