Contemporary Nigerian music has taken center stage once again as Afrobeats icons Tems, Wizkid, Asake, and Burna Boy landed major nominations for the 2026 Black Entertainment Television (BET) Awards. The full nominations list showcases a heavy presence of African talent competing in top global categories.
Grammy-winning singer Tems leads the Nigerian contingent this year, cementing her place as the most-nominated African artist of this cycle with three prominent nods. Tems is nominated for Best Female R&B/Pop Artist alongside global heavyweights like SZA and Kehlani. She also picked up a nod for the BET Her Award for her track "First," as well as a Viewers’ Choice Award nomination for "Raindance," her chart-topping collaboration with British rapper Dave.
In one of the most competitive fields of the night, superstar Wizkid and Afro-fusion wavemaker Asake earned a joint nomination in the Best Group category. The recognition follows their wildly successful collaborative project, highlighted by hit tracks from their joint Real EP, which dominated playlists globally. Meanwhile, Burna Boy secured his spot on the roster with a nomination in the Best Collaboration category for his stellar feature on American rapper Gunna’s hit track "WGFT," from the album The Last Wun.
The 2026 BET Awards ceremony is scheduled to take place on Sunday, June 28, 2026, at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles, California. The annual event will be hosted by popular American comedian Druski, making him the youngest host in the award show's history. Beyond the music categories, the 2026 edition also introduces two brand-new voting categories: the Fashion Vanguard Award and the Pulse Award.
