Sudan Cholera

A severe cholera outbreak in Sudan has resulted in 172 deaths and over 2,700 infections within a single week, according to the country's Ministry of Health. The majority of cases—approximately 90%—have been reported in Khartoum state, particularly in areas like Karari, Omdurman, and Umbada. The outbreak is exacerbated by the ongoing civil war, which has devastated essential infrastructure, including water and electricity supplies, leading to the consumption of contaminated water sources.

Medical facilities are overwhelmed, with organizations like Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) reporting that many patients arrive too late for effective treatment. The conflict between Sudan's army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) since April 2023 has not only displaced millions but also crippled the nation's healthcare system, making it challenging to contain the spread of cholera and other diseases.

Health officials and aid organizations are urgently calling for a coordinated response to address the crisis, emphasizing the need for improved water, sanitation, and expanded treatment capacity to prevent further loss of life.
