Sirât, Oscars

Spain has officially chosen Sirât, directed by Óliver Laxe, as its entry for the Best International Feature Film category at the 98th Academy Awards. Sirât was selected by the Spanish Film Academy over two other shortlisted films, Romería by Carla Simón and Sorda (Deaf) by Eva Libertad.

The film earned acclaim earlier this year when it picked up the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival, shared with Sound of Falling.

Sirât follows a father and son’s journey into southern Morocco’s desert and rave-scene in search of their missing daughter, a narrative underpinned by themes of grief, dislocation and spiritual longing.

The decision comes ahead of the Oscar submission deadline and reflects strong festival momentum behind Laxe’s film. The 98th Academy Awards ceremony is scheduled for 15 March 2026.
