Shoprite Nigeria Faces Store Closures and Supply Crisis Amid Economic Pressures
Omoyeni Olabode

Shoprite Nigeria is confronting an acute operational crisis as some stores in Ibadan and Ilorin close their doors, while many branches in Lagos and Abuja struggle with severely depleted stock levels.
Shoppers in Lagos report that iconic outlets such as Ikeja City Mall are now sparsely stocked. Frozen foods, wine selections and staple groceries are among the product lines most affected. In Ibadan, both the Ring Road and Mokola branches have shut, with notices on the doors citing “circumstances beyond immediate control” and promising a return to normal operations eventually.
Management attributes the shortages and closures to ongoing negotiations with suppliers under new ownership, pointing to supply chain disruptions and rising costs. They insist the closures are temporary and operational continuity remains a priority.
Economic analysts warn that Shoprite’s woes reflect broader challenges for retail in Nigeria; inflation, erratic supply lines, and intensified competition are pushing many firms to downscale or even exit the market. Some fear Shoprite could follow exit patterns seen in other African countries.
