On April 23, 2025, Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, announced the immediate deployment of specialized anti-bandit squads nationwide. This initiative aims to address the escalating violence and insecurity, particularly in regions like Kwara, Benue, Sokoto, Plateau, and Enugu states.

  • Key directives from the IGP include:
Each Police Mobile Force (PMF) squadron must maintain at least one fully equipped, combat-ready unit on constant standby.
  • Quarterly training sessions focusing on operational proficiency, ethics, professionalism, and responsible policing.
  • Reorganization and resizing of squadrons to enhance efficiency and agility.
  • Withdrawal of mobile police officers from unauthorized escort duties to reinforce tactical effectiveness.

The IGP emphasized that PMF commanders will be held accountable for their personnel's conduct, underscoring the importance of discipline, respect for human rights, and operational excellence.
This deployment is part of broader efforts to restore peace and security across Nigeria.
