Reps Propose Single-Day Voting for All 2027 Elections

Single-Day Voting

The House of Representatives is pushing a major reform that would see all five major elections in 2027 conducted on the same day. This proposal is part of the draft Electoral Act 2025 and aims to streamline the electoral process, reduce costs, and improve efficiency in Nigeria’s election system. If passed, Nigerians would vote for the president, National Assembly, governors, state assemblies, and other key positions on one day.

Lawmakers backing the idea believe it will increase voter turnout, curb electoral violence, and minimise the burden on security agencies and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). They also argue that it would help reduce the tension and political unrest often associated with staggered elections.

The bill is still under consideration, and public consultations are expected in the coming months. If the proposal becomes law, it will mark a significant shift in Nigeria’s democratic process ahead of the 2027 general elections.
