Renée Victor, Beloved Voice of Abuelita in 'Coco,' Passes Away at 86

Renée Victor, the acclaimed actress best known for voicing Abuelita Elena in Pixar’s Coco and portraying Lupita in Showtime’s Weeds, has passed away at the age of 86. She died on May 30, 2025, at her home in Sherman Oaks, California, surrounded by her family, after a battle with lymphoma.

Born on July 25, 1938, in San Antonio, Texas, Victor began her entertainment career in the 1960s as a singer and dancer. She performed globally with her husband under the duo name “Ray & Renée,” earning the nickname "the Latin Sonny & Cher" . Transitioning into television in the 1970s, she hosted KTLA’s Pacesetters, a show associated with the Chicano Power movement, and later took on various acting roles in television and film.

Victor's portrayal of Abuelita in Coco (2017) brought her widespread recognition, contributing to the film's global success and cultural impact. Pixar paid tribute to her, stating, “We are heartbroken to hear of the passing of Renée Victor, the voice of Abuelita in Coco and an incredible part of the Pixar family. We will always remember you” .

Her daughter Margo honored her mother's memory, describing her as a force of nature with sharp wit and boundless talent. “She was dignity and beauty till the end... She would never allow anything to keep her down,” Margo shared in a heartfelt tribute.

Renée Victor's legacy extends beyond her memorable roles; she is remembered for her resilience, passion, and contributions to the arts. She is survived by her daughters, Raquel and Margo.
