Nearly two months after his tragic death in Ghana, the remains of Nigerian boxer Oluwasegun “Success” Olanrewaju are expected to return to Nigeria next week. The President of the Nigeria Boxing Board of Control (NBBofC) confirmed that all necessary diplomatic and bureaucratic clearances have been approved — including Ghanaian autopsy reports, death certificates, and medical permits — paving the way for the repatriation .

Olanrewaju suffered a fatal collapse during his March 29 bout with Ghana’s Jonathan Mbanugu at the Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra. He was rushed to Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The incident triggered an immediate outcry over boxing safety standards and raised serious questions about pre-fight medical procedures .

The NBBofC has committed to honouring Olanrewaju with a ceremonial ‘lap of honour’ upon arrival and an organized transfer of his body directly from the airport to his family’s home without further delays. Discussions are also underway regarding compensation from Ghana for the boxer’s family, including his fight purse and other entitlements .

As Nigerians prepare to welcome the fallen boxer home, stakeholders are urging African boxing federations to enhance oversight and safety measures for fighters. Olanrewaju’s death serves as a sobering reminder of the fragile support structures around athletes and the crucial need for reforms to prevent future tragedies.
