Ram Dealers in Nigeria Lament Low Patronage Amid Short Supply Ahead of Sallah

As the Eid-el-Kabir festival approaches, ram dealers across Nigeria are expressing concerns over low customer turnout despite a noticeable shortage in livestock supply. This situation is attributed to a combination of factors, including cross-border trade restrictions, economic challenges, and rising transportation costs.

One significant contributor to the scarcity is the export ban imposed by Niger Republic's military authorities on livestock movement into Nigeria. This measure, aimed at preserving their own dwindling animal population following severe flooding in 2024, has disrupted traditional supply chains. Bashir Hassan, a ram dealer from Niger Republic, noted that authorities have directed security agencies to seize animals being transported across the border, leading to a reduced influx of rams into Nigerian markets.

The shortage has consequently driven up prices. In Lagos, for instance, small rams are priced between ₦300,000 and ₦350,000, while medium to large-sized rams range from ₦500,000 to ₦1,000,000. In Kano, large rams have been sold for up to ₦1.2 million, with medium ones priced between ₦550,000 and ₦700,000. These steep prices have deterred many potential buyers, leading to low patronage.

Economic factors further exacerbate the situation. The devaluation of the naira has diminished purchasing power, making it challenging for many Nigerians to afford rams for the festival. Additionally, increased transportation costs due to fuel price hikes and insecurity in certain regions have added to the overall expenses, impacting both sellers and buyers.

In response to these challenges, some Nigerians are exploring alternative options. Reports indicate that individuals are opting for smaller animals like goats or even poultry for the sacrificial rites, while others are choosing to focus on the spiritual aspects of the festival without the traditional animal sacrifice.
