President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has submitted a formal request to the Nigerian Senate for the confirmation of six new top officials to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The fresh nominations, which comprise four national commissioners and two Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs), are intended to fill critical vacancies created by the expiration of tenures as the electoral body ramps up preparations for the upcoming general elections. Alongside the new nominees, President Tinubu also approved the reappointment of Dr. Bala Bila to continue serving as the national commissioner representing the North-East zone.
Key Appointments and Replacements
1. Professor Mustapha Aliu — Nominated as National Commissioner representing the North-West, replacing Professor Abdullahi Zuru.
2. Bashir Muhammed Umar — Nominated as National Commissioner representing the North-Central, replacing Professor Muhammad Adamu.
3. Mrs. Oluwatoyin Babalola — Recommended as National Commissioner representing the South-West. Formerly the REC in Osun State, she steps into the role succeeding Professor Cornelius Ajayi.
4. Dr. Samuel Akinjide Akinleye — Nominated as a Resident Electoral Commissioner representing Ekiti State.
5. Zahradden Basiru Sanusi — Nominated as a Resident Electoral Commissioner representing Jigawa State, succeeding Professor Saidu Ahmed Babura.
"President Tinubu urged the Senate to expedite the confirmation process of the nominees in view of the forthcoming general elections next January, ensuring that the commission maintains full operational capacity during a crucial period."
With electoral preparations shifting into high gear, the swift screening and confirmation of the nominees by the National Assembly are expected to clear the path for seamless administrative continuity at the electoral commission.
