Presidency Apologises After Mistakenly Listing Living Icons as Deceased
Omoyeni Olabode

The Nigerian Presidency has issued a public apology after mistakenly including the names of several living national icons in a list meant to honor the deceased. The error, which appeared in an official document circulated during a recent national event, sparked confusion and backlash across the country.
Among those wrongly listed as deceased were prominent figures from politics, the arts, and civil service, some of whom later responded with surprise and concern. The mix-up quickly went viral, prompting public outcry and calls for greater diligence in handling sensitive national records.
In a statement released by the Presidency’s media office, the government acknowledged the mistake and assured the public that steps are being taken to prevent such errors in the future. Officials attributed the incident to “clerical oversight” and extended apologies to those affected and their families.
While some have accepted the apology in good faith, others see it as a sign of deeper inefficiencies within the system. The incident has reignited discussions about professionalism and accountability in the management of official state communications.
