Plateau First Lady Launches Major Health Campaign Targeting Immunisation and Malaria Elimination

Helen Mutfwang, wife of the Plateau State Governor, on Friday in Jos, officially launched a comprehensive health campaign in collaboration with the state’s Ministry of Health and key stakeholders.
The initiative, she explained, focuses on boosting immunization coverage, increasing vaccination rates, and accelerating malaria elimination efforts. It also marks the beginning of several important health events: the National Immunisation Plus Days (NIPDs), African Vaccination Week, and the commemoration of World Malaria Day.
Mrs. Mutfwang highlighted that the campaign aligns with the Sector-Wide Approach (SWAP) — a strategy that promotes unified planning, budgeting, and reporting in the health sector to enhance service delivery.
Describing the triple campaign as a major milestone for Plateau's healthcare system, she announced that the NIPDs would run from April 26 to 29. During this period, health workers will conduct house-to-house immunisation, market outreach programs, and offer vaccinations at worship centres across the state.
Children aged 0-5 years will receive oral polio vaccines, while routine immunisations will be available at health facilities statewide. Special outreach teams will also visit hard-to-reach communities, with a particular focus on five local government areas: Jos East, Bassa, Barkin Ladi, Kanke, and Langtang South, to ensure no child is left behind.
Speaking on World Malaria Day, Mrs. Mutfwang emphasised the year's theme — "Malaria Ends With Us: Reinvest, Reimagine, Reignite" — and called for renewed commitment, investment, and innovation to eliminate malaria in Plateau and across Nigeria.
She urged residents to actively support both the immunisation campaign and malaria prevention efforts, stressing that collective action is crucial to overcoming these health challenges. Mrs. Mutfwang reaffirmed the state government's strong commitment to improving healthcare access and outcomes for all citizens.
The event was attended by health officials, traditional rulers, and development partners, all of whom pledged ongoing collaboration to ensure the success of the campaigns. Free mosquito nets and malaria test kits were also distributed to residents as part of the initiative.
