Inflation Refund Checks

More than 8 million residents of New York will begin receiving inflation refund checks of up to $400 from September 2025, according to the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance.

The initiative, which is part of the state’s 2025–2026 budget plan, is designed to cushion the effects of rising prices by refunding some of the additional sales tax revenue generated by inflation. The payments will be sent automatically by mail and will continue to roll out over the next several weeks.

Eligibility covers residents who filed a 2023 New York State resident income tax return (Form IT-201), were full-year residents in that period, and were not claimed as dependents on another taxpayer’s return. Payment amounts will vary depending on income and filing status: single filers earning up to $75,000 could receive as much as $200, while married couples filing jointly or qualifying surviving spouses earning up to $150,000 are entitled to the maximum $400.

Officials stressed that taxpayers do not need to apply for the checks. Payments will be mailed automatically to the address listed on their most recent state tax return. Those who have relocated since filing are advised to update their address with the Department of Taxation and Finance to ensure timely delivery.
