Fake Drugs

The Association of Community Pharmacists of Nigeria (ACPN) has raised an alarming concern, stating that over 50% of drugs currently in circulation across the country are counterfeit or substandard. The association warns that the prevalence of fake medications poses severe health risks to millions of Nigerians and undermines public confidence in the healthcare system.

According to the ACPN, the issue has been exacerbated by unregulated open drug markets, inadequate surveillance, and insufficient penalties for offenders. The association has called for urgent government intervention through stricter regulatory oversight, investment in pharmaceutical technology, and the complete sanitization of drug distribution channels. Healthcare professionals and civil society groups are also urging increased public awareness to help consumers identify and avoid counterfeit drugs. Without immediate and sustained action, experts warn that Nigeria’s health crisis could spiral into a national emergency.
