Ondo state mpox vaccination

Ondo State has confirmed 12 cases of mpox across eight local government areas and has launched a targeted vaccination campaign to halt further spread.

According to the State Primary Healthcare Development Agency, the rollout began on 11 August 2025 and will continue until 21 August 2025, focusing exclusively on residents aged 18 and above.

Dr Victor Adefesoye, Head of Disease Control, clarified that while mpox was historically transmitted mainly by monkeys, it is now known to be spread by other animals as well. The vaccination campaign will directly reach those at highest risk, with prior contact tracing informing the list of recipients.

This swift and targeted response reflects increasing concern across Nigeria, following a recent history of mpox cases in multiple states and wider efforts by health authorities and international bodies to curb outbreaks. By prioritising at-risk adults and coordinating with stakeholders, Ondo is taking a decisive step to protect public health.
