"Not in Our Hands": Guardiola Admits City Have Lost Control of Title Race After Everton Thriller

Pep Guardiola cut a frustrated figure on the touchline as Manchester City’s hopes of a seventh Premier League title were left in "critical condition" following a chaotic 3-3 draw against Everton on Monday night. Despite a 97th-minute equalizer from Jérémy Doku, the two points dropped at the Hill Dickinson Stadium have effectively handed the title advantage to Arsenal, leaving the Gunners just three wins away from their first league trophy in 22 years.
The match was a pulsating encounter that saw City take an early lead through Doku, only for Everton to roar back with a double from Thierno Barry and a strike from Jake O'Brien, leaving City trailing 3-1 late in the second half. While Erling Haaland and Doku managed to salvage a point in the dying moments, Guardiola admitted after the final whistle that his side no longer controls their own destiny. "We knew we had to win," Guardiola said. "It is no longer in our hands."
Following the draw, the Premier League table shows a clear path for Mikel Arteta’s men, while City must now rely on an Arsenal collapse.
With a five-point lead, Arsenal can secure the championship by winning their final three matches against West Ham, Burnley, and Crystal Palace. Even if City wins their game in hand and their remaining fixtures, they would still finish two points behind a "perfect" Arsenal.
The result adds a layer of tension to what many believe could be Guardiola’s final season at the Etihad. Having steered City to three consecutive last-gasp titles in previous campaigns, the "arch-Napoleon of the run-in" now finds himself in the rare position of being the underdog. Sluggishness in the middle of the park and defensive lapses—specifically a rare blunder from Marc Guéhi—proved costly against a resilient Everton side that David Moyes praised for "bolstering their own ambitions."
While Doku remained defiant, stating that the team would "keep on fighting," the reality is that the momentum has shifted firmly toward North London. Arsenal now heads into their Champions League semi-final against Atletico Madrid with the psychological boost of knowing they are the masters of their own domestic fate.
