The Nigerian Army has secured a major victory by arresting Ifeanyi Eze Okorienta, popularly known as “Gentle de Yahoo,” a high-ranking commander of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN). The capture took place at his hideout in Aku-Ihube, Okigwe Local Government Area of Imo State, following a joint operation by the 34 Artillery Brigade and other security agencies.

According to the Army’s statement, several weapons and incriminating items were recovered during the raid. These included an English pistol, 120 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, 25 rounds of 7.62mm NATO ammunition, a cartridge, six mobile phones, military and police uniforms, as well as a German flag. Troops also uncovered a workshop used for dismantling stolen vehicles destined for resale and destroyed ten motorcycles found at the scene.

As part of wider security operations, the military reported other successes across the country. In separate operations, troops rescued more than a dozen kidnap victims in Adamawa, Katsina and Kogi States. They also neutralised terrorists and recovered weapons in Katsina, while in Benue, Kogi and Kaduna States, several suspects connected with violent extremist activities, armed robbery and gun-running were arrested.

The capture of “Gentle de Yahoo” is being seen as a significant breakthrough in efforts to weaken insurgent activities in the Southeast. It also signals the Army’s determination to dismantle criminal networks that rely on arms, stolen vehicles and intimidation to exert control in the region.
