Nigeria’s Lookman Blasts CAF Decision as a Shame for Africans

Super Eagles forward Adam Lookman has criticised the Confederation of African Football (CAF), calling a recent decision about the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2025) “a shame for Africans” and expressing frustration on behalf of players and supporters. Lookman’s comments came after CAF made rulings on scheduling and match protocols that many spectators and stakeholders felt were unfair to teams or insensitive to fans, especially given the hard-fought nature of the tournament and the expectations of participating nations, including Nigeria.
In his reaction, Lookman did not hold back, saying that some administrative choices “do not reflect what African football should stand for,” and that they risk undermining the spirit of a tournament meant to celebrate football excellence across the continent. He reiterated that players invest significant effort and national pride in AFCON, and that decision-makers must be mindful of how rulings impact not only teams on the pitch but the millions of fans who follow them.
While Lookman and other critics called for more transparent and engaging processes from CAF, officials defended their decisions as grounded in logistical realities and broader tournament planning. CAF representatives have pointed to factors such as broadcast obligations, venue availability, weather considerations and international calendars as reasons behind their choices. Supporters of CAF say that large tournaments inevitably involve difficult decisions and that communication between the confederation and member associations remains key to managing expectations.
What do you think about Lookman’s comments on CAF’s decisions, and how should tournament organisers engage with players and fans in the future? Comment below and share your thoughts.
