Nigeria Joins 141 Nations in Overwhelming UN Endorsement of Two-State Solution for Israel-Palestine Conflict

The United Nations General Assembly has overwhelmingly backed a declaration endorsing a two-state solution to the Israel-Palestine conflict, with 142 countries voting in favour, 10 opposing and 12 abstaining.
Nigeria was among the nations supporting the resolution, affirming its long-standing position that peace can only be achieved when Israel and a sovereign Palestine coexist in security.
The declaration, co-sponsored by France and Saudi Arabia, lays out time-bound, irreversible steps toward resolving the conflict. These include calls for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire, ending the occupation of Palestinian territories, and establishing a recognised Palestinian state alongside Israel.
In response to the vote, Nigeria’s foreign affairs authorities reiterated their support for the proposal, stressing the importance of both parties returning to the negotiating table and international law being respected.
Observers say the resolution, though nonbinding, re-energises diplomatic momentum and signals strong global consensus. However, they also caution that much depends on follow-through: implementation, accountability, and willingness on both sides to abide by the terms.
