In a solemn response to the devastating flood that struck Mokwa Local Government Area on May 29, 2025, Niger State Governor Umar Bago has announced the cancellation of all official Eid-el-Kabir celebrations across the state. This decision comes as a mark of respect for the victims and to allow for a period of mourning and reflection.

The flood, described as one of the worst in the state's history, claimed over 200 lives, affected more than 500 households, and displaced over 3,000 residents. Significant infrastructural damage was reported, including the collapse of major bridges and roads, which hampered rescue and relief efforts.

In a statement issued by the Secretary to the State Government, Abubakar Usman, Governor Bago directed that traditional Sallah festivities such as Hawan Bariki, Durbar, and other public gatherings be suspended. The governor urged citizens to observe the festival in a low-key manner, focusing on prayers for the departed and acts of charity towards those affected by the disaster.

President Bola Tinubu has expressed condolences to the victims' families and directed an emergency response to support those affected and expedite recovery efforts.

The state government's decision underscores the gravity of the situation in Mokwa and reflects a commitment to prioritizing humanitarian concerns over ceremonial displays during this period of mourning.
