Niger State Government Bans Religious Preaching Without Licence

The Niger State government has announced a ban on all forms of religious preaching without prior authorisation. The government stated that anyone who wishes to preach in the state must now obtain a licence before engaging in such activities.

According to officials, the move is aimed at curbing rising cases of incitement, hate speech, and communal clashes that have sometimes been linked to unregulated preaching. The government emphasized that the new policy applies to all religions and denominations and is intended to promote peace, unity, and security across the state.

Under the new directive, religious bodies and individuals will be required to apply formally, after which their applications will be vetted by relevant authorities before approval is granted. Those who defy the order and preach without a licence risk facing prosecution and penalties under state law.

What do you think about this ban? Is it a step towards peace or a restriction on fundamental rights?
